Why I Don’t Design “Just Logos”

One of the most common questions I get as a designer is:

“Can you just design a logo for us?”

And honestly, it’s a completely fair question. Most people think of a logo as the starting point of a brand.

But the truth is, a logo is only one small piece of the bigger picture.

When I work with clients, my process is rooted in branding strategy first. Before any design begins, we look at things like:

  • Who your business is for

  • What makes you different from competitors

  • The personality and feeling your brand should communicate

  • How your brand will show up across your website, social media, packaging, and marketing

  • From there we develop the visual identity: colours, typography, design elements, and finally the logo itself.

Without that foundation, designing a logo is a bit like designing a house before deciding where the walls go. It might look nice, but it won’t necessarily work for the long term.

A strong brand system ensures that everything works together and that your business is recognizable and consistent everywhere it appears.

Because of this, I typically design logos as part of a full branding package rather than as standalone projects.

For new businesses especially, this approach helps create a brand that feels intentional, cohesive, and built to grow with you.

If you're just starting out or planning a new venture, investing in branding early can make a huge difference in how your business is perceived from day one.
